Kory Smith is a litigation lawyer whose practice focuses on commercial litigation, construction disputes, employment law, and estate litigation.

With a strong foundation in managing complex disputes and assessing litigation risk, Kory provides clear, practical advice to clients. He approaches litigation strategically and pragmatically, focusing early on client objectives and efficient paths to resolution. He emphasizes careful preparation, clear communication, and constructive engagement with opposing counsel to achieve effective outcomes.

Kory’s practice includes employment-related disputes such as wrongful dismissal claims, severance negotiations, human rights matters, workplace investigations, and grievance-related litigation. He also works on construction disputes, including claims involving deficiencies, delays, payment issues, and conflicts between owners, contractors, and subcontractors. In addition, he advises clients on estate disputes, including will challenges, dependant support claims, and disputes involving the administration of estates and powers of attorney.

With a doctorate in sociology, Kory brings exceptional academic strengths to his legal practice, including advanced research, writing, and analytical skills. He is able to absorb large volumes of information quickly, identify patterns and underlying issues, and present arguments in a clear, structured, and persuasive way.

Earlier in his career, Kory worked on matters involving Indigenous and Aboriginal law in both private practice and government settings, an area that continues to inform his broader legal perspective.

Kory remains active in academics as a part-time professor at Carleton University and at the University of Ottawa. He is actively involved in the community and has served on several boards of directors. He was a member of the Ticket Defence Program’s Board of Directors from 2019 to 2022 and has served on the Board of Directors of HelpAge Canada since 2023.

Outside of practice, Kory enjoys staying active, travelling, exploring Ottawa’s restaurant scene, and spending time with family and friends.
